This book was written for an essay competition, and initially five or six thousand words, plus a few photographs and a map or two, was the extent of its ambition. But once embarked upon it grew. Which of the 130 plans in the county archives should be included? Which dates, and which of the stations earmarked for closure? The answer to these and similar questions could only be “all of them”, resulting in the most comprehensive account of Dorset’s railways yet written.
