According to Ernst Birchler and Dave Brennand the first six units were built before construction was halted for the duration of the Second World War. They were stored at various places without traction motors, generator sets or other electrical equipment and painted blue and cream. This livery was re-discovered when Unit 06 was damaged in a collision in Ilford Car Sheds. As the livery for the LNER’s electric multiple units changed from red and cream to blue and cream in the Second World War this suggests a construction date of 1940.
