Description
The significance of the wagonways and railways of Lord Carlisle has never been fully appreciated. The reason for the apparent obscurity of Lord Carlisle’s Railways is due to them never having an Act of Parliament permitting their construction. No permission was required as the vast majority of the system was built on Lord Carlisle’s own lands. Over its 155 years’ history, Lord Carlisle’s wagonway and the later railways, often termed the “Brampton Railway” or “Brampton and Hartleyburn Railway” have several claims to fame and historical importance.
